After 15 days of exciting tennis, the last match of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year has been concluded. Of course, the new US Open Men's Singles Champion between two first-time Grand Slam finalists has been crowned. It was No.14 seed Marin Cilic, who defeated No.10 seed Kei Nishikori convincingly in straight sets 6-3|6-3|6-3. Did I predicted it right? My pick for 2014 US Open Men's Singles Champion.

Nishikori has found no answer to Cilic's serve and baseline play and the only thing he could do was nod and wonder what was going on. Does Nishikori's three consecutive long matches has taken its toll and nothing has left for him during the championship match? Maybe. As he was off from the very first ball he hit. In addition to that slump is the pressure of winning his maiden slam, the first Asian man to do so.

Between the two finalists, it was Nishikori who should have been confident because he defeated three consecutive top 10 player en route to the finals including his four-set victory over top-ranked Novak Djokovic. But it was Cilic who carried the momentum and newfound confidence when he beat Roger Federer in the semifinals for the first time in sixth attempt.

The evidence can be easily noticed. Though, pressured and nervous in the moment, he handled it perfectly. He just focus on his game. In fact, Cilic was broken just once in the third set. And every time he faced break point, he erased it confidently by delivering unreturnable serves. I thought Nishikori would mount a comeback as what his coach Michael Chang did when he won his only Grand Slam title at 1989 French Open, but he was not determined enough to do such. Instead, he watched every break point opportunities being erased.

Serving for the championship, Cilic delivered two big serves that Nishikori couldn't return. On the third point, Nishikori's backhand was called out, giving him three championship points. Cilic tried to focus on the last point as he is one point for the title. But nerves came in. He was double-faulted on his first championship point. But on the second, he hit a cross court backhand for the winner that Nishikori couldn't reach. Cilic fell to his back to excitement.

After being banned from playing the US Open last year, he just focus on improving his game under the guidance of Goran Ivanisevic. All the "hard work" he did do paid off. And now, he can call himself a Grand Slam champion. As for Nishikori, the road to greatness was put on hold. Yes, he was denied in his first trip, but who knows maybe one day his chance might come again.

Cilic does what Stanislas Wawrinka did in Australia. He was inspired and believed that he can be a Grand Slam champion. But changing off the guard, it is really coming? Yes, but not too fast. That's a different story. We might not see one of the Big Four in the finals, but changing off the guard will only happen, if one champion can do it day-in, day-out in every tournament they played in, most especially in Grand Slams. Cilic is the new US Open champion. Hope to see more of him in the future. Or someone new will rise above the rest.
