It is very rare I write or feature a doubles match in this blog. Actually this is the first time I will feature it. Maybe because of one player, that is, my personal favorite of mine, former Grand Slam Champion and former world No.1, Hall of Famer Martina Hingis. Yes, the main reason is because of her. I was quite surprise that she enters 2014 US Open as an unseeded team partnering Flavia Pennetta. I tried to see their progress. They upset great teams en route to their first Slam final together against No.4 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. Can Hingis/Pennetta partnership add another Slam trophy to their cabinet?

It has been eight years since Hingis retired from tennis and 17 years since Hingis won the US Open doubles title with Jana Novotna in 1998. Now, contesting another US Open doubles title has been a sweet and definitely a surprise given how competitive women's doubles team are there. Pennetta, a former partner of Gisela Dulko before retiring competitively from the sport, is no stranger to this stage. Both of them found a partnership that might be a team to beat in every tournament they will entered.

Beating No.3 seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza in their semifinal match 6-2|6-4, Hingis/Pennetta means business. With both are talented doubles specialist, they found their game naturally. They will surely give Makarova/Vesnina, a 7-5|6-3 winner over unseeded pairing of Kimiko Date-Krumm and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, a run for their money when they meet on the championship day. But one thing is for sure, only one great team will be crowned 2014 US Open doubles champions.

Hingis' last appearance in doubles final when she and Mahesh Bhupathi lifted 2006 Australian Open Mixed Doubles title. It's been a long wait for Hingis' fans but it is worth the wait as we her showing us how good a player she is. She showed it in World Team Tennis when she brought her team to several championships and won. She has also been named Most Valuable Player. She teamed up with former No.1 and rivalry Venus Williams to this year 2014 World Team Tennis Championship.

Makarova, though she lost her run at this year singles title to Serena Williams in semifinals. With Vesnina, they took out the Williams sisters in the quarterfinals in a very close contest 7-6(7-5)|6-4. Therefore, the anticipated battle between the Williams sisters and Hingis on grandest stage has been spoiled and will not be relived. As Pennetta, though she was beaten by Williams in the quarterfinals, her run at doubles might be her glory. This is an exciting match. Who will end up as a champion team?

Champion: Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta
