The 2014 US Open Women's Doubles Championship has been concluded. But not everybody who are rooting someone to win will celebrate. In fact, the No.4 seed pairing of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the doubles championship, their second Grand Slam doubles title, over unseeded pairing of Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta. Thus, denying Hingis to capture another Grand Slam title since 2002 Australian Open with Anna Kournikova. Though there could only be one champion, Hingis' journey to competitive tennis has been great. Did I predicted it right? My pick for 2014 US Open Women's Doubles Champion.

The Russian pairing rallied from down a set and a break to win the title 2-6|6-3|6-2. It was a close contest. Hingis and Pennetta thought they had broken to get the final set back on serve at 3-3, but the Russians challenged a call that has been a winner was in fact out by a millimeter. The Russians saved a total of three break points to hold and clinched the championship by winning the next two games.

This has been a great consolation for Makarova after she was thrashed by Serena Williams 6-1|6-3 in her first major singles semifinal. Although, it is a tough loss for Hingis, it has been an incredible journey after coming out from retirement. She and Pennetta played three warm-up events leading to the US Open.

After coming out of retirement, Hingis decided to play doubles competitively. She tried different partners. One is former top 10 Daniela Hantuchova but their pairing was not fruitful as they expected as they were not advanced to second or third round in the tournaments they played. In fact, they were lost in 2013 US Open first round. She and her protege Sabine Lisicki has been successful by winning the biggest title in 2014 Miami Open, but their partnership ended so soon. In 2014 Wimbledon, Hingis and Vera Zvonareva, who is also attempting a comeback from injury, has not been successful too after facing tough opponents.

With Hingis and Pennetta, it seemed their partnership clicked. Given by their performance at 2014 US Open, I am hoping to see more of them and be a top contenter in every tournament they played. This was a great start for them. But for now, it was Makarova and Vesnina who hold the championship trophy.
