The WTA Premier event in Rome has been concluded and it's been a week of tight and grueling matches, comeback of top players from injuries, stunning performances, and of course, shocking upsets. Who would have thought that a doubles specialist, a player outside top 20, and a player hasn't reached a final in any Premier event will emerge as a champion? My pick for the 2010 Internazionali BNL d'Italia Women's Champion.

After a week Rafael Nadal raised the trophy after winning his 17th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title at Rome, another lefty Spaniard wins the title on women's side: Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, a doubles specialist, currently ranked outside top 20, and hasn't been in a final of any Premier level event, claims the biggest singles title so far by displaying stunning performance in a tight two-set match.

But achieving such feat has never been easy for Martinez Sanchez, as her conqueror is a top 10 player, twice a champion in this event, and the seventh player to defeat both Williams sisters, Jelena Jankovic.

Martinez Sanchez used her mix of power, precision, and spins to emerge as a winner, while Jankovic didn't sustain the confidence or maybe luck after downing both the Williams sisters. She may have been worked easily defeating Venus Williams, but Serena Williams gave her a real test.

Leading on both sets, Martinez Sanchez was almost in the brink of losing both of them and the championship in her hands as Jankovic coming back strong to level the match, but still fell short as she was run out of gas. But Martinez Sanchez have an extra gear to break Jankovic, as she fell her back on the ground celebrating her victory.

Martinez Sanchez also reached the finals in doubles for a Rome sweep partnering Nuria Llagostera Vives, but was defeated by the team of Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta to claim the doubles title. That was a great at Rome for Martinez Sanchez, a champion in singles and a runner-up in doubles. Will she be able achieve such kind of feat at 2010 Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open?
