Cincinnati Open, one of the tune-up events heading to 2010 US Open was over and this year's edition hasn't been so kind to top players. Why? With great matches was on display, top contenders for the title suffered an early exit. Will these upsets contribute a slight damage in their campaign at Flushing Meadows?

Top seed and defending champion Jelena Jankovic, No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki, No.6 seed Vera Zvonareva, and No.7 seed Agnieszka Radwanska bowed out in the third round, while No.3 seed Elena Dementieva and No.5 seed Francesca Schiavone have been beaten in their opening match. Leaving the draw wide open and giving No.4 seed Kim Clijsters an easy passage for the title. Did I predicted it right? My pick for Women's Champion.

Kim Clijsters
2010 Western & Southern Financial Group
Women's Open Champion

When Clijsters broke her silence and returned to the tour a year ago, the tournament in Cincinnati was one of the event she entered before she claimed her second Grand Slam title at the US Open. Her quarterfinal finish in this event in 2009 was enough of an achievement for a mother who been out of the game for a while.

A year had passed and this year Clijsters came back in Cincinnati to try to equal or get better her last year's result. This time, being already ranked inside the top 10, Clijsters was seeded fourth and handed a relatively tough draw. Considered it tough, but she is the one to beat and one of the top contenders for the title.

Though the most of the seeded players suffered upsets, there still Maria Sharapova who can give much trouble to Clijsters. How will Sharapova's run ended?

Consider it luck, but Clijsters is too fortunate enough as if she is destined to claim the Cincy title, when her opponent in the semifinal, the back-into-form Ana Ivanovic retired after three games. Unlike Sharapova, she handed big trouble by the rising star and compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the other semifinal match before posting a three-set victory, 6-4|3-6|6-2.

In the final, two former world No.1s and US Open champions faced each other for the Cincy title. Will this be a preview of the 2010 US Open final? Possibly yes, but too early to say.

Who can expect this Cincinnati Open championship match will be a blockbuster after top players were tumbled out in early rounds?

The much anticipated and nail-biting final match didn't bring disappointments to their Cincinnati fans, as the drama and high quality tennis were witnessed. Sharapova held three match points at 5-3 in the second set, but rain delays shifted the momentum to Clijsters forcing a tiebreak and winning it 7-4. And Clijsters runaway with the third set victory to clinched her third title of the season, 2-6|7-6(7-4)|6-2.

This win will surely give Clijsters a huge boost in the upcoming US Open. Can she sustain that winning form at Flushing Meadows?
