Roland Garros is somehow very rich in making history when it comes to producing champions, whether it would be a streak of consecutive winners, greatest upsets, champions failed to capture French Open title, etc.

This time another history will be written in record books as Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone finally reached a Grand Slam final for the very first time in their glorious career. The winner, of course, will be guaranteed the most coveted and the rare opportunity Grand Slam title. Did I predicted it right? My pick for Women's Champion.

Francesca Schiavone
2010 French Open Women's Champion

French Open has been truly unpredictable to determine who will be the champion. But Stosur and Schiavone battled it out to reach this golden opportunity at the grandest stage. And this year, that opportunity was grab by Schiavone, the first Italian woman ever to capture the Grand Slam title, the second for Italy since Adriano Panatta in 1976.

Schiavone, seeded No.17 and considered as an underdog, fights her way through the finals, beating world No.3 Caroline Wozniacki along the way, in which she has never been before in her previous Grand Slam appearances. Luckily, she has been awarded an easy pass to the finals when Elena Dementieva, who has been touted too to take the title, was retired in her semifinal match against the Italian after first set tiebreak due to calf injury. Through her bewilderment, the match was over. Moments later of amazement, she kissed the clay court and celebrated the unexpected victory.

In the finals, Schiavone was in a serious business, as her consistent aggressive play using her speed, topspin, net play, and mixed shots, give her her first hopefully not the last Grand Slam title, defeating Stosur in a quality two-set match 6-4|7-6(7-2). Though Stosur had a 4-1 lead in the second set but she lose her nerves, a chance to level the match, and extend it to third set. The 93% success rate at the net, that is, failing only once on her 15 visits, is enough statistic to rattle Stosur's game plan.

Now, Schiavone finds herself as one of the Grand Slam champions and she belongs, finally, to the list of the elite, lifting her to the top 10 for the first time. At 29, she is the second oldest woman to win a Grand Slam title.
