Serena Williams and the Wannabees

The door has been widely opened for Serena Williams, the top seed and the defending champion, as the top contenders for the Wimbledon title as has been wiped out one by one. With the draw features blockbuster matches and some interesting matchups, it seems like Serena has not been challenged well and most likely until the final comes.

This only implies that with the four women left in the draw Petra Kvitova, who will take on the defending champion, Vera Zvonareva, who upset Kim Clijsters, and Tsvetana Pironkova, the spoiler of supposedly all-Williams final by upsetting Venus Williams, Serena has a huge advantage to defend her crown for her 13th Grand Slam title.

Can somebody stop her?

I guess, none. Maria Sharapova is the only woman I can see in the top half of the draw that could stop Serena, but then wasn’t able to do so and mostly nobody will unless someone can match Serena's power—physically and mentally.

Zvonareva is mostly likely Serena's foe in the finals but she has to deal seriously with Pironkova in the semifinals. Pironkova's Wimbledon campaign has been her biggest achievement by in the tour and by knocking out Venus in the quarterfinals, she really play out of her comfort zone and it pays off.

Has anybody ever thought that Serena's challengers will be all first time semifinalists at Wimbledon? None. Maybe not even in our wildest dreams that three of four Wimbledon semifinalists are first timers, right?

Well, the good news for these wannabees is they have nothing to lose as reaching semifinals at Wimbledon is a huge achievement. They can swing their racket freely and play the match of their life. Whoever gets to a spot to finals, it will be remarkable.

Serena has yet to drop a set and possibly never will. With such kind of dominance, it is indeed that Serena will stay on top until someone can resolve her. As even a former champion, can't do nothing but give credit to a woman who has been consistently strong throughout the tournament.

The question is not "Who can stop Serena?", but "How can you stop Serena?".

You can't outplay Serena easily like she can't give you much opportunity. So when you do, you have to grab it as if there's no other chance will come again, if not, you will surely pay the price.

Opportunity knocks only once.
